Overview (Content and Syllabus etc):
The H3ABioNet-Fogarty Seminar coordinators and task force cordially invite you to join us for the next Fogarty Student Seminar in September 2020. Each Seminar will see two Fogarty students (MSc/Mphil/PhD) present a talk related to their ongoing projects.
I am a graduate research fellow at the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe), pursuing MSc Bioinformatics at Pwani University under the EANBiT project. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. My research interest is in the application of computational biology to understand the evolutionary dynamics of vectors of epidemiological importance. My current research seeks to elucidate how variation in conserved mitochondrial gene sequences of forest and domestic strains of Aedes aegypti (the Yellow Fever mosquito) correlates with dengue outbreak occurrence patterns in East Africa and continents outside Africa.
Isabel Mensah holds a BSc Statistics degree, and an Mphil in Scientific computing and industrial modelling through the National Institute for Mathematical Sciences (NIMS), at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana. She is currently pursing her PhD in Biodata Analytics and computational Genomics under the supervision of Dr. Pandam Salifu and Dr. Amoako Yirenkyi. Isabel has a keen interest in Mathematics and at the start of her postgraduate studies, she found a huge interest in Bioinformatics thereby, channeling her interest to develop novel mathematical models to handle huge genetic data to make biological meaning. Her major focus has been on employing wavelet transforms for preprocessing RNA-seq/scRNA-seq for accurate prediction differential expression of genes using Autism Spectrum Disorders in Neonate amist an example.
