Ensembl Genome Browser
This 1-day workshop offers participants the possibility of gaining hands-on experience in the use of the Ensembl genome browser but also provides them with the necessary background information.

The course is an introduction to the field of bioinformatics, with a focus on important bioinformatic tools, algorithms and resources. It combines theoretical and practical sessions to allow participants to gain practical experience in using various tools and resources
Structural bioinformatics focuses on the identification and analysis of structure, dynamics and interaction of biological macromolecules in 3D space. While doing so, it aims to make connections between sequence ? structure and function of macromolecules. Information on structure is particularly important, especially for structure based drug discovery process. In this presentation, I would like to present different aspects of our research related to computational drug discovery and tool development. The talk will be divided into three sections; SNPs, Proteins and Capsids.
This seminar will introduce participants to effective skills for searching any database including PubMed. The participants will be introduced to techniques for carrying out a search strategy and key skills needed to identify relevant literature of PubMed or any other database.
H3Africa in collaboration with the Cambridge-Africa is pleased to announce an informal research mentorship/collaboration program between African Researchers and Cambridge University and its affiliated institutes. This opportunity is open to 4 or 5 early/middle career H3Africa affiliated researchers or support staff of high calibre. The mentorship aims to link successful H3Africa affiliated researchers/support staff with relevant Cambridge counterparts. The pre-requisite is that the H3Africa affiliated researcher/support staff should have a draft proposal they have developed as a lead.
We will introduce methods to plan and perform systematic reviews. We will cover how to formulate an answerable research question and a search protocol, define inclusion and exclusion criteria, searching for the evidence across various databases and documenting the search strategy. In addition, we will discuss tools and methods for managing articles for the systematic reviews.
Some of the courses that will be taught include: 1) Introduction to Computing Concepts in Bioinformatics (CS) 2) Introduction to Database Systems (CS) 3) Genomics and Applied Bioinformatics (CS) 4) Introduction to Probability and Statistics (MATH) 5) Integer Programming in Bioinformatics 6) H3AbioNet accreditation based course on ?performing gene expression analysis with RNA-Seq data"
The Foundational Training Workshop in Genomics is a full-immersion residential program designed for top-performing African graduates, postdoctoral trainees, faculty members and laboratory technicians. The one month training covers a curriculum of best laboratory practices, reinforced by intensive course work and hands-on practical applications in molecular Biology, genetics, and genomics to support their professional development toward becoming independent scientists.
As part of establishing MSc programs in Bioinformatics, the Eastern Africa Network for Bioinformatics Training (EANBiT) will trial an intensive 5-week residential course to be hosted by the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology, icipe in Nairobi, Kenya and Pwani University in Kilifi, Kenya from 11th June ? 14th July 2018. Designed to 'train the trainers', this training aims to strengthen technical capacity, to strengthen generic skills as well as to improve training skills of individuals.
The H3Africa chip is being used by the H3Africa projects to generate data that will need to be analysed. The course will consist of two components; a series of online lectures provided by experts in that specific domain. These are to introduce the main concepts and theory behind population genetics and GWAS. The second part of the course for selected participants will be a practical Bring Your Own Data (BYOD) workshop on the analysis of H3Africa genotyping data using the H3ABioNet GWAS and Imputation workflows.
